YITZHAK SHAMIR DIES AT 96


Yitzhak Shamir, former Israeli PM
Shamir who was former Israeli Prime minister has died aged 96.
He died at a nursing home in Herzliya after a prolonged illness

prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu praised his deep loyalty to the state of Israel, saying the former spy, soldier and statesman was a symbol of loyalty to the state of Israel and the Jewish people.

In 1915, Shamir was born in Poland, he moved in 1935 to Palestine after his mother and sister were killed in the Holocaust

He retired from politics in 1992 after he was defeated in the elections. Shamir was given the highest civilian honour of his country, The Israel Price in 2001

He will be mostly remembered as one of the opposing figures of the Palestinian state.
